75 years after its inception, the NHS is struggling.

On July 5th 1948, Aneurin “Nye” Bevan opened the first NHS hospital in Manchester, promising a service that would “relieve money worries in times of illness”.

In 2023, though, having battled through a global pandemic, it is now having to deal with record long operation waiting lists and hospital waiting times, and frustrations about staffing and pay among doctors and nurses.

As health care professionals across the UK recognise this 75-year anniversary, our Health Reporter Daniel Keane discusses the history of our health service, the struggles it's facing now and what needs to change to secure its future.

Plus, East London A&E Doctor Andrew Meyerson compares the NHS to healthcare in the USA, and shares his concerns that it's getting closer to privatisation.
