Two Britons are in hospital and 15 other people reported missing after a tourist boat sank in Indonesia.

The boat was travelling between Lombok and the Komodo Islands in eastern Indonesia when it sank at about 7pm local time last night.

Ten survivors were rescued, reportedly from New Zealand, Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as the two Britons.

But the fate of the other 15 people on board, thought to be of various nationalities, is not yet known.

It is also unclear whether there were any more Britons on the boat.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware that two British nationals have been hospitalised following an incident in West Nusa Tenggara, Eastern Indonesia, on 17 August. We are providing consular assistance.

"We are in contact with the local authorities about the incident and stand ready to offer consular assistance to any other British nationals who may be involved."

She would not comment on the state of their injuries.

Lombok is an island in the Indonesian archipelago, east of Bali.

Home to around 3.1 million Indonesians, it attracts thousands of tourists every year.
