Briton killed in Kabul attack

A Briton was among the victims of a devastating suicide attack which has killed at least 14 people in Kabul.

The blast occurred at the Taverna du Liban restaurant, which is popular with tourists and westerners, in the Afghan capital, officials say.

Foreigners and Afghans are among those killed in the blast in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighbourhood and the UN said four of its staff were missing, according to the BBC.

And the Foreign Office (FCO) has confirmed that a British national was among those killed in the incident.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national and we stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family."

The attack was carried out at a time when the restaurant would have been busy with diners.

The suicide attacker detonated his explosives outside the gate of the heavily-fortified restaurant, the Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Ayoub Salangi said.

Two gunmen entered the restaurant and started shooting at people inside.

It is believed that attackers were eventually shot dead by security forces when they arrived at the scene.
