Piers Morgan has defended himself against homophobia claims after he branded Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield’s Golden Globes kiss “weird”.

The Hollywood A-listers embraced after Reynolds lost out on the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy to La La Land’s Ryan Gosling at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Unaware that Reynolds was kissing Spider-Man actor Garfield, Morgan said: “Ryan Reynolds full kissing some guy in the audience – a proper on tongue job. It’s a bit odd. Everyone was like ‘woah, what’s going on there Ryan?’”

His Good Morning Britain co-star Susanna Reid added: “Ryan Reynolds just to point out is married to Blake Lively.”

Morgan continued: “I wasn’t questioning his sexuality. I was saying he kissed a bloke with tongues at the Golden Globes. It’s not something you would expect Ryan Reynolds to do.”

Some viewers accused Morgan of making an offensive remark with one viewer calling him a "homophobe".

“Piers Morgan just claimed on @GMB that two men kissing is 'not normal behaviour,' tweeted one user. “Why is he in such a prominent position within the media?”

Another posted: “Why is kissing another man weird, Piers? Homophobe.”

Morgan replied: “I said two STRAIGHT men snogging each other at an awards ceremony on TV seemed a bit weird.”

Another viewer attempted to explain that Garfield and Reynolds have played Spider-Man and Deadpool, respectively, and that fans are keen for their friendship to blossom into a romance in the Marvel universe.

They tweeted: “Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool who is obsessed with Spider-Man, who Andrew Garfield plays. That might be why they kissed.”

Morgan replied: “Ok, but still a bit weird?”

Reynolds and Garfield entertained fans with their 'bromantic' embrace, with some deeming it “iconic”.

On collecting his award over Reynolds, Gosling joked that he thought he had been mistaken for the Deadpool actor.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds, but it’s getting out of hand,” he quipped.

“Ryan, obviously there’s been some kind of mistake, but I’m up here if you don’t mind.”
